Why this calculator is different
My colleague Orlando at the downtown AlphaGraphics location built the original production calculator after we measured the paper stocks we actually run. Instead of relying only on generic paper-weight assumptions, the tool uses those measured calipers to estimate the physical book block and the binding size we need.
I am publishing Orlando's tool here because it solves a real production problem: paper weight by itself does not tell you the finished thickness of a book. Two stocks described with similar weights can have very different calipers.
Binding Size Reference
Enter physical sheets, not printed pages. Example: a 100-page duplex book normally has 50 inside sheets. Add a separate stock section when inserts or sections use a different paper.

Perfect bound mode
Choose each inside stock and enter the number of physical sheets. The calculator totals the measured caliper and applies the original shop compensation matrix to return the flat spine-width reference for prepress layout.
Coil & Wire-O mode
Build the physical stack, choose the cover configuration, and the tool returns the raw stack height, turning clearance, plastic coil reference, and Wire-O reference based on the production rules built into Orlando's calculator.
Important: this is calibrated to our shop stocks
The caliper database in this tool is based on paper we measured and use in our production environment. It is intentionally more specific than a generic online spine calculator. Paper thickness can vary by manufacturer, finish, lot, and actual sheet. If you are producing somewhere else, verify the physical stock before using the result as a final bindery or scoring specification.
Measured stocks built into the tool
The current database includes common uncoated text and cover, gloss text and cover, silk text and cover, and 10pt through 16pt card stocks. The calculator also supports multiple stock sections in one book, which is useful when a project includes inserts or mixed paper.
